Welcome to Talk To Me Creative. A weekly photography journal series that focuses on photography, and the creative life of Suzanne and Mike of SheWanders Photography, wedding photographers based in San Diego, California. Sharing a personal perspective on what it takes to be a successful photographer including their favorite and most inspiring resources.
As a photographer, I have been extremely inspired by the era of abstract expressionism. The marriage of colors and shapes is so mesmerizing. Artists like Matisse, Pollock, De Kooning, Lee Krasner, and Robert Rauschenberg are some of my favorites. I find their ability to meet at the intersection of modernity and timelessness so inspiring, since the goal of many weddings is to keep with tradition but also mix in some modern ideas. It’s a delicate balance that I love to capture in my images.
I think it’s fascinating to consider their time in history, their influences and inspiration, and what was going on in the world at the time as well. I’m always most fascinated by their choice of color palette and original ideas. It really inspires me to find continuity in each shoot to tell a fuller story and look for opportunities to stay on theme.
For instance, if Johanna and Drew are having a garden wedding at the Del, rather than a winter wedding at The San Diego Museum of Art like Jillian and Kevin, I’m going to look for backgrounds influenced by the ocean, architecture, color palette and interior that support their story. It’s advantageous to find a photographer who shares the same taste and love for a certain aesthetic as you do so you can be sure you’ll love the images that you’re going to look back on in 20 years.
